I'm just about to order a new book,
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

This is a bit of background about a relatively new subject which considers teaching and learning within a given field as the subject of scholarly inquiry by practitioners and teachers in that field.
My own academic preparation and background is as a mathematician, but over the next year, I'll be starting to think about how to study teaching and learning mathematics in the context of first year university and college environments.
I'll be part of a cohort in the
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Leadership program, a one year certificate programme for faculty interested in studying teaching and learning in higher education. Whew! That's quite a mouthful.
Anyway, it promises to be an interesting and useful program, and I'll be reporting on my experiences and thoughts as I make my way through this over the next ten months or so.
